Norm Pattis, a talented trial lawyer in Connecticut, who has broad experience both suing law enforcement officers in civil cases for police misconduct, as well as defending officers accused of excessive force, writes frankly in an opinion piece, published earlier this week on his blog, about how the law can and should be changed to promote accountability, and explains why and how we got to where we are now. He advises a legislative fix to promote strict liability by the government, in cases where their officers are found to use excessive force by a jury. He explains why that kind of accountability has not occurred in our justice system for many years now, based on his experience in the trenches. It is a persuasive and a thought provoking read, and I commend it to you for your consideration as a worthy idea to address the problems in our society; the righteous, peaceful protests in the streets against how our justice system has been operating; and the violence and property damage that has sometimes spilled over related to those protests.
